Patrick Davidson Tacksman, possibly a Davidson of Inchmarlo, a witness at Davidson of Newtown baptisims so probably related. Note 2: Recognised in London by Mr Coutts as a Cooper of Wraes. Seen off in his ship by the Coutts family. Washed overboard and lost at sea. Note 4: Andrew Couper of Newtown of Clatt was a witness at baptisms. Note 5: Their daughter Elizabeth Campbell b1830 taught at Rothiemay. Qualified first woman in Scotland with Government Teaching Certificate. Note 6: Letter from Arthur Davidson RN, Kennethmont, Maybury Road, Barnton, Midlothian 12th November 1934 to Dr George Cooper (words in brackets are from Betty Cosgrove). Thanks very much for your letters with all the news. We never hear anything here. I knew a good lot about the history you have been reading. The first Coutt's of Coutt's Bank started in Edinburgh. It was in the Scotsman the other day about a history of Banking in Scotland but I did not keep it unfortunately. This Coutts emigrated to London. Your grandmother was born about 1819 but she was one of the youngest of the family. I think her mother became insane but I am not sure. I know they had great trouble with one of the family who was mad (Betty Cosgrove heard from her mother via Nora Cooper/ Thomson something odd about Ledinghams). I have heard Auntie Ann (Davidson) talk about the Davidson that married the Leslie of Wartle. She belonged to the generation before Aunty Ann and would have been a cousin of her father (confirms relationship with Patrick Davidson of Scotstown). I have seen a whole family tree but I don't know where it is. I also heard of Sandy Cooper walking in the Strand (I think) outside Coutt's Bank and old Coutts came out and recognised him at once and said "guid sake its a Cooper from Wraes". Before the big Banks were started the Coopers and Davidsons both lent money to all the little farmers round about. I have seen old Arthur Davidson's (writers grandfather) book with the names of about 30 people he had lent £30 to £50 to and the Coopers of Wraes had lent the Laird of Wardhouse so much that they had no rent to pay for a while but eventually settled their debt by driving off all the Laird's cattle. Your great grandfather at Wraes was very well off for those days but I don't think he made his money off the farm, because it was your grandfather that built the steading and also cleared off hundreds of cart loads of stones so that the place could be cultivated. I am pleased that Hugh is a little better but how he will be able to live with the food he gets beats me (poor housekeeper). Note 7: Isabella Allan b? Huntly was house servant at Wraes during 1851 census. A description now follows of the above a. This resulted in loss of hair in later life. From Betty Cosgrove - My father was expected to marry Mary Bisset. Once he had met mother, I take it, he wrote to his mother saying "I don't want to hear any more about Mary Bisset". I am sure Grandma found it all very difficult. Mother did meet Mary who married late in life. I can sympathise with Grandmother. As a child at Dunnydeer I reminded my parents so much of Grandmother, as if I were her ghost!. It is at the wall between the oldest and second oldest part of the cemetery, about 3 graves down to the left from the path. It also commemorates his wife Janet Cooper, their son John who died at Demerera, their daughter Jessie wife of Charles Quinn. Also Charles Quinn, son of Jessie, and Janet Cooper Quinn (Dolly) daughter of Jessie both of whom died at Westcote, Portsoy. Another stone, through the opening and up to the right commemorates John Fortune and his wife Mary Ann McConnachie. Also their son John McConnachie Fortune and daughter Elizabeth Allan Fortune. This stone is also against the wall but on the other side. Other members of this family are probably buried at Portsoy or at Fordyce old and new cemetery. Other graves at Fordyce cemetery - George Allan of Glassaugh House Died 1936 aged 76 years - William Allan of Glassaugh House Died 2nd June 1943 aged 74 years - John? Allan of Glassaugh House Died 15th May 1950 aged 84 years. Research shows this was not the same family. Charles Quinn was the son of John Quinn (farmer) and Mary Ann Costello. Charles occupation was given as Inland Revenue at the time of his marriage at Glassaugh and witnesses were John Fortune and Andrew Allan (so Andrew Allan had not gone to Canada yet). Births, at Mains of Glassaugh, of Charles Hamilton Quinn and Janet Cooper Quinn were registered by aunt Jane Allan who had not yet married Andrew Davidson. Allan Robertson was a bachelor who lived in Australia. He visited Dunnydeer House about the late 1950s. When he died in Australia some of his personal belongings were sent to his cousin Dr Cooper who in turn gave some of the trinkets (some belonging to Allan Robertsons mother Helen Allan) to George Watson Cooper who had 3 rings made from plain gold rings set with Zircon's from cufflinks. These were given to Betty, Lorna and Carol. The disruption in 1843 apparently started at Forgue church. Note 1: George Watson Cooper remembered of a whisky still located among the clump of trees at Wraes beside the back road from Insch to Huntly. Note 2: From Sandy Thomson - James lived in Altrincham, Cheshire and worked for Royal Insurance (and Cotton Exchange). Aunt Chrissie Duff maintained contact, Manchester not being far. The war (1939-45) made it difficult to maintain and James had died. When petrol restrictions were lifted about 1946/47 and a small quantity was permitted for pleasure John Duff said Chrissie should visit and I would drive her. I can recall 2 Sunday afternoon visits to this Fortune. John Duff did not accompany. I think they were family but did not meet. Note 3: From Sandy Thomson - He moved to Milltimber, Aberdeen early 1930's as manager of Royal Insurance, Aberdeen. My parents liked Peter and his wife and we made a number of visits. I cannot recall what happened or when as our father became ill in 1939 and war intervened. Note 4: At this time Inland Revenue and Excise were different jobs. It looks as if Charles Hamilton Quinn was a revenue Customs man. Letterkenny is a port. Was he a Customs man at Portsoy?. Elizabeth Allan was baptised at Culsalmond 05-01-1839. Witnesses were John and Andrew Allan. George, Jessie, Janet and John were all baptised at Fordyce in 1850. Witnesses were Rev Andrew Allan and Rev Wm Middleton of Culsalmond. Elizabeth, George, Jessie and Janet were born at Culsalmond but there is no record of births there other than Elizabeth. Mr and Mrs Allan (d1923 and 1939) are buried at Huntly - Section C, Plot 442, Gate on RHS, against wall, no gravestone The Culsalmond Riot - from the Press and Journal Weekend Review 06-03-1965 On October 28th 1841 the Presbytery of the Garioch met at Culsalmond to moderate the call to William Middleton of Titabootie as colleague and successor to the Rev Ferdinand Ellis, the Presentee of the Patron of the Parish, the Laird of Craigievar. Middleton was unpopular and only 45 heads of families voted for him, 89 against. The Presbytery upheld the call by seven votes to five. In those days of pre-disruption controversy it was a clear case of "intrusion" - the foisting of a minister on the congregation against its wishes. So, on November 11th when the Presbytery, backed by the sheriff and a large force of the newly formed Police under Captain Anderson, arrived to "settle" Mr Middleton in his charge there was a riot. The famous bell of John VANDENGHLEN in its beautiful Renaissance belfry dating from 1506 looked down on a scene unique in its annals. A vast crowd of anti- intrusionists from "a the airts" had converged on the old kirk on its hill. Captain Anderson had his whiskers tugged, the minister had his nose pulled and when at last the Presbytery got into the kirk and sat huddled at the foot of the pulpit non-stop pandemonium broke loose. It is said locally that the noise was heard at Pitmachee, Old Rayne. Captain Dalrymple, an elder declaring that the Presbytery had been deforced from its duty, claimed the laws protection and the official party fought their way to the manse and inducted Mr Middleton there. Five alleged ringleaders of the riot were tried in the High Court at Edinburgh. None were convicted and they returned to Culsalmond like conquering heroes. (See Mrs Quinns Cooper history page 9). The "Free Church" adherents built themselves a wooden kirk just opposite the school. This "Timmer" kirk as it was called was later lifted and carried to a site at the boundary of three estates at Catden. Then in 1867 the present fine church and manse was built at Williamston. The auld kirk is now roofless and the South church, formerly the United Free Church is the one in use. It is now linked to Daviot, Rayne and Old Rayne and has a female minister (1991). The fine Episcopal church at Fisherford is now disused and the former Congregational chapel at Cairnhill was in ruin but was reconstructed as a house about 1990. Location of the Timmer Kirk - Beside a ruined cottage behind the Tearoom just off the Glens of Foudland road - not the wooden Tearoom on the left going north, but one on the right, below the road in a converted steading. The Timmer Kirk was on a slight hill. The manse for it was the first house on the left on the road which branches off to the right from the A96 about 1.5 miles north of Colpy (The sign is for a craft shop and restaurant to the right of the road). Colpy Farm - Where Hugh Allan and his wife Janet Cooper lived. The steading is still as it must have been at that time but the house has been demolished and a modern bungalow put in its place. Location of Colpy Farm - From Insch, take the road leading to Colpy from Denwell Road (ie via Waterton and Knockanbaird). Go almost to the end of Colpy village then turn off to the left along a narrow road. The farm is only about 200 yds along the road with the steading on the left hand side and the house on the right. The United Free Church opened in 1867. A lot of money was collected locally and there were plenty of helpers. Apparently, at one time the builder ran out of stones, so the farmers stopped their work (at the time the "neeps were in a bleeze" ie more than ready to hoe) yoked up their carts and went to collect more though it is not known where the stones came from. A beautiful manse was also built but it is now a private house and is called "Culsalmond House". When the buildings and furnishing were complete there was no debt as the money collected was sufficient. 02. Among the earliest notices of Carnbrogie is that made in a charter by Alexander II to the Abbey of Arbroath in 1234, where in enumerating the lands of Tarves the davach of "Cairnbrogyn" is included. It was this Alexander Davidson who is mentioned by Spalding as "ane good honest man of the Kingis", and as having been plundered by Mr James Baird of 300 merks, although from a subsequent statement it would appear that his total loss was 450 merks. He was son to Mr Thomas Davidson, and was received as a Guild brother on the 27th October, 1578. William Davidson of Newton, grandson of the second Alexander here commemorated, was Provost of Aberdeen from 1760 to 1762. Thomas Davidson, admitted burgess 4 Oct 1538. From Betty Cosgrove - Newtown in Culsalmond (on A96 The Old Turnpike built 1804). The bounds of these lands were fixed in 1259 by Richard, Bishop of Aberdeen and Thomas, Abbot of Lindores. This Newtown belonged to royalist Gordons and later Davidsons. Capt Davidson built the Mansion House in 1779 and later sold it to Col McIntosh who later sold it to Alexander Gordon. Betty Cosgrove read in Aberdeen Library that Alexander Davidson was a captain of militia. In an arguement over boundary for raising militia he threw a glass of wine in another militia officer's face. My father Arthur Davidson born Newtown of Wardhouse told the same story of a Davidson ancestor. Are the Davidsons of Newtown in Culsalmond and the Davidsons of Newtown of Wardhouse the same family?. 03. THE SPANISH GORDONS OF WARDHOUSE, as remembered by Elizabeth Cosgrove nee Davidson (December 1989) My father referred to the Laird of Wardhouse as the Spanish Laird. I remember Wardhouse as a fine Adam style house - father said the old Lairds coffin was swung out of an upstairs window and lowered to the hearse. He thought the coffin too large for the stairs- but I believe this is what they do in Spain. Father also recalled a bullring at Wardhouse. Also Carpenter and blacksmiths cottages which are still inhabited today. They were recalled howling with laughter because "Yon Spanish folk have knoeket the heid of the Virgin Mary and we're to pit it on". Insch recalled the Wardhouse horses bolting with the carriage which finally came to rest on its side. Expecting death and disaster the crowd stood back in horror as the carriage door opened and "oot steppid a Priest" who looked round them all and said "The Deil looks after his ain". The Davidsons had lived for generations at Newtown perhaps the largest near-in farm on the Wardhouse estate. Grandmother Davidson was widowed in 1879 and was left with 3 small children Christian, Hugh and Arthur. Arthur, my father was but one year old. Andrew Davidson had been sent for to help with a difficult Stallion, the beast kicked him in the chest and gravely injured him. According to Christian's daughter Marjorie, he lived about a month in this state, and told his wife Jeannie to get her cousin John Cooper at Wraes to help with the farm when he was gone. He is also supposed to have left instructions that Hugh and Arthur should not be farmers - but I have not as yet found these instructions. So young were the Davidson children that none remembered their father. According to Marjorie, John Cooper helped with the farm, but the farm men gave the young widow a bad time. Certainly I remember father saying she stepped out of a doorway to confront a Sythe bearing grieve who was pursuing a farm man and threatening to cut his head off. According to Marjorie this situation was ended when John Cooper arrived one morning saying he had put up the banns at the Church on his way round and so Jeannie was married to John. Christian's son Hugh Duff tells me that as a young girl at Newtown his mother much admired the handsome Spanish sons of Wardhouse. Much later my father served as a Surgeon in the Navy and was stationed in Gibraltar. He certainly went to a bull fight in Spain. My mothers father was similarly stationed in Gibraltar and here my parents met. Arthur and Amy rode into Spain and through the cork woods that provide the cork for the sherry bottles. Here I should say that the Gordons of Wardhouse were in the Spanish wine trade, at I think Jerez. As a child I heard my parents talk much of Spain, the Spanish and King Alphonso and Queen Ena. When this pair had to Wardhouse was occupied by John leave their strife torn country, father handed me a newspaper with a "read that" - it said that Mr Gordon met King Joseph Gordon during the 1859-1860 Alphonso and Queen Ena at Wardhouse Station and took them to his home. valuation roll and by Carlos Pedro Gordon during 1869-1870. Edith Later the Laird joined Franco and the Spanish Civil War and became a VIP in Spain. The roof was taken off Wardhouse Johnstone, formerly of Dunnydeer after the Second World War when rates were charged if a roof was on a house. A Spanish holiday visitor to Gartly smiddy, Insch remembers that her confirmed that Mr Gordon was indeed a very important man in Spain. mother (Jean Allan) was a maid there. A Gartly lad working in a big London hotel was spoken to by a lady who recognised his N.E. accent and said she belonged there too, but was on a visit from Spain to see her Gordon relations at Haddo. So there are still in the 1980s Gordons who return from Spain. James and Anne Cooper have a "Genealogy Chart of the Gordons of Wardhouse". 27. THE COOPER FAMILY HOMES in the Insch area as written by Elizabeth Cooper (February 1990) MAIN STORY From about 1689, maybe earlier, the family home was at Wraes which was leased from Wardhouse Estate. North Balgaveny, Forgue was owned by George Cooper (b1806). His son John Alexander Cooper carried on the farms when he died. Newtown was rented from Wardhouse Estate by Andrew Davidson and his wife. When he died in 1879 his wife carried on until she married John Alexander Cooper of Wraes. After marriage he took over the lease of Newtown and lived there but also remained tenant of Wraes and owned North Balgaveny, Forgue. In 1888 he gave up the tenancy of Wraes and Newtown and took over the tenancies of Mains of Dunnydeer (324 acre farm and house), where he resided, Pyke (96 acre farm and house), Petersfield (82 acre farm and house) and a croft (10 acres with 2 houses), the last 2 at a later date perhaps. The croft consisted of a small field which is now incorporated into the field at the roadside between the Smiddy and the farm road to Pyke. The house and buildings must have been bought at sometime by the blacksmith. Feuduties were paid by the blacksmith and Mrs Boyd (1942) whose house was known as Boyds cottage at that time but was later changed to "Hillview" and is now owned by a Mrs Alexander (1990). It is situated next to the small car park at Dunnydeer cemetery. He bought the estate of Dunnydeer in 1900 (probably Mill of Dunnydeer including house and called "the cots", Milltown of Dunnydeer and Whitebrow) also known as Sunnyside. He also bought the estates of Overhall (probably including Broomend, Westside and Mains of Overhall) and South Dunnydeer (probably where Dunnydeer House Farm is now) in 1903. He farmed 900 acres and let out a further 500 acres to tenants. Dunnydeer House was completed in 1909 on a green field site which had no previous house or steading. John Alexander Cooper and his family lived for a short time at Glengarry, Beechcroft Terrace, Insch as Dunnydeer House was used as a convalescent home for officers during the 1st world war (1914-1918). After the 1914-1918 war Colonel Hugh Allan Davidson bought Mains of Dunnydeer, Pyke and Petersfield from his stepfather. These farms had to be sold on the death of Colonel Hugh Allan Davidson in 1942 to James Mackie for £17,500. According to the "conditions of sale" of North Dunnydeer these were bought by Colonel Hugh A. Davidson D.S.O. in February 1920 and then disposed of in 1942 after his death. Excluded from the sale was the small piece of plantation at the north most point of the hill grazing where Colonel Davidson was buried. A right of way to the grave exists from the main road by way of the plantation and also along the north-east boundary of the hill grazing which was retained by the sellers ie the Davidson and Cooper families. From Bety Cosgrove - Maybe, I should record a bit more about the sale of Uncle Hugh's farm. Hugh Duff recalled that father confided in him. "My brother wants to leave me his farm and I don't want it" and there were some remarks about bullying big brother!. The upshot was it was left to father, and the stock to Aunty Chrissie, but if father did not take on the farm he got nothing. We debated this in Edinburgh, wartime when farms had to be fully utilised, father aged by foreign service, David and myself too young to envisage moving into Dunnydeer - 1942 was a dark time in World War 2. So it was decided to give up our claim and sell - particularly to the advantage of widowed Jessie in Forfar. I have since heard Francis say that she and Dempster often gave thanks for Uncle Hugh's money. Interestingly, the family farm in Cornwall, Tredown, was sold at the same time (1942) and Uncle Dick, the inheritor, was serving in Egypt Jack Cooper farmed Broomend then later Overhall and Westside leased from his father. Mains of Overhall was leased to another tenant. John Alexander Cooper died in 1925. Dunnydeer House Farm, Mill of Dunnydeer, Milltown of Dunnydeer and Whitebrow (these 4 totaled 300 acres), Overhall, Broomend, Westside of Premnay and Mains of Overhall (these 4 totaled 320 acres) and North Balgaveny were all bought for about £1,600 by Dr George Cooper. Jack Cooper managed Dunnydeer House Farm, Mill of Dunnydeer, Milltown of Dunnydeer, Whitebrow and North Balgaveny. He also leased Overhall, Broomend and Westside from his brother. Millburn, Commercial Road, Insch (next to Shevock) was the home of Allan Patrick Cooper and his wife Jessie when he was in partnership with Lewis Harper in the business of Cooper and Harper, Drapers, Grocers and Ironmongers. Dunnydeer House was used by the army for a short time during the 2nd world war to house officers and one ran into the big tree by the cattle grid with his car. The troops were stationed in Nissan huts at Insch playing fields. Douglas continued to live there during this time and apparantly had a great time. The suggestion to use the house as a maternity home during the 2nd world war was turned down by Jack. It was to have been a safe place in case the one in Aberdeen had to be evacuated. Jack Cooper died in 1951 and John Hugh, his youngest son, took over the leases of Overhall, Broomend and Westside. He also replaced his father as manager, to Dr George Cooper, of the Dunnydeer House Farms (including Mill of Dunnydeer, Milltown of Dunnydeer and Whitebrow). George Watson Cooper (George W.) the eldest son became grieve at Dunnydeer House Farms looking after the practical side of the farms. During this time the farms became prosperous. The only members of the family of the Cooper's of Dunnydeer still in the Insch area are Betty Cooper who lives in a bungalow built by George W. and her at 5, Mayfield Terrace in 1977 and Arthur and Marjory Cooper who built a bungalow at 53, Dunnydeer Park (about 1982) but moved to a semi-detached house at 37, Dunnydeer Park about 1987. BACKGROUND INFORMATION An extract from "A Century of Aberdeenshire Agriculture" by Isabella M. She Most farmers in the area have a copy of the book handed down from generation to generation. George W. was given one by a worked in the Church of Scotland friend and Dr George Cooper also had one although it was probably disposed of after his death. offices - was much concerned with The Garioch Farmer Club originated on the 12th July 1808 at Pitmachy, now spelt Pitmachie, which had an inn run by a the union with the free kirk and vintner called Mr Cooper. It is interesting to see amongst the names of the 25 originators George Leith of Overhall but womens guild. no mention of Dunnydeer. On page 28 it says that "whenever the members of the club find themselves in possession of funds they offered them Another frequent visitor was Annie liberally for improvements of all kinds". In 1828 they found themselves in this situation as they had a balance of Henderson nee Mitchell daughter £132.4s.7d and with the help of a grant from the Highland Society they offered various premiums including "substantial of the Old Rayne doctor and sister sums" offered for the "encouragement of land reclaiming, house building, cleanliness and neatness in house and garden of the Insch doctor. She was etc". brought up in the house which is now Copied from the book on page 31 is "As an example of cottages built by the tenants of smallholdings for which premiums the Lodge Hotel. were given we may take that of Joseph Cooper at Slack 1831. Length of house 40 1/2 feet, breadth 16 1/2 feet, height 7 feet; stone and lime built and neatly harled; plastered and whitewashed inside; glass windows 3 feet by 2 1/2 feet; roof very neatly thatched with straw; 2 apartments, besides a centre closet, neatly and compactly floored with clay; a garden well arranged and laid out; dunghill properly concealed, and at a proper distance from the house. The interior of the cottage is reported as "doing the occupier great credit" and the furniture as "most suitable". It would seem that Joseph and his sister Jane went to live in the cottage at Josephtown probably about the time their brother George married Elizabeth Roger (29-11-1801). It stands on the right side of the Insch to Kennethmont road, near what was once Wardhouse Station and at the junction of the road leading past the station up to Newtown. It has obviously been renovated in past years. Local people would have spoken of the cottage as Joseph's"toon" meaning Joseph's farm or croft and the name remains the same now in 1990. Later Joseph used the premium from the Garioch Farmer Club to build a house at "Slack" which would explain why he and his sister died there (previously I thought that perhaps they had been looked after there in their later years by their niece Mrs Robert Ord (Jane Cooper) but obviously this was not the case). In the valuation roll of the parish of Kennethmont 1869-70, No 79 Farm of Slack occupied by William Findlay rent £85.0.0 No 84 House and yard, Slack occupied by John Robertson No 85 House and yard, Slack occupied by George Duncan rent £4.0.0 In the valuation roll of the parish of Kennethmont 1859-60, No 100 Farm of Slack occupied by Robert Ord rent £76.8.4 No 84 Croft (no name) occupied by George Duncan rent £4.0.0 Perhaps an earlier valuation roll of Kennethmont ie 1849-50 would show Josephs name as being the tenant of one of the crofts mentioned. Perhaps one from 1828 would show whether he lived at Josephstown at the time. Obviously Robert Ord gave up the tenancy of the farm at Slack between 1860 and 1869. It is possible that William Findlay may have been his son in law. Mrs Quinn would only have been about 9 years old when Joseph died so the cottage she visited and wrote about would have been Slack. She probably confused that with accounts from letters etc with the cottage at the gate of Wardhouse - Josephtown (see page 3 of the Cooper Family History). Isabella M. Bruce also says in her preface that the Garioch Farmer Club possessed well kept and well preserved records, unbroken since the club began in 1808. She also includes on page 31 the description of the dwelling house on an important local farm of the time ie 1830-31 "It consisted of a but and ben, and an immense length of a mid house sufficient for bed accomodation for the whole family, besides milk cellerage for the farm; the kitchen, sufficiently large for cooking, eating and sitting purposes for the master, mistress, 7 of a family, 2 servant women, 3 horsemen, 3 orra men and generally a few puir folk (sometimes not very few)". Apart from the mention of Mr Cooper who had the inn at Pitmachy there is no mention of any Cooper until page 48 which mentions that in 1891 John A. Cooper of Dunnydeer won the special prize offered annually for the best draught female - horse I think. Page 51 - Mention is made of a business meeting of the club on the show day in 1838 and a Mr Andrew Beattie of Dunnydeer (the first mention of Dunnydeer). Page 54 - Mention is made of a burgers meeting on January 4th 1838 at Insch with Baillie Roger in the chair (see page 11 of Family History). Page 57 - James Cooper, Hillbrae, Bourtie (probably no relation). George W. (son of Jack) remembers visiting Wraes as a young boy to see Mrs Allan and were a match for the Insch loons. Jeannie, the husband had died earlier. He also remembers being at Mrs Allan's funeral at Huntly cemetery. It was also In the late 1930s the tennant gave up attended by Jack, Colonel H.A. She taking it on but his wife Amy was died there in 1950?. Her funeral was also at Huntly and attended by Douglas, Jack, George W. and John Hugh (sons of not keen as the house had no services Jack). or sanitation and there was a mill pond. Pyke had an ordinary farm mill in the barn as most farms had. At one time it had been operated by water power, hence the dam. George W. says he has used it, driven by a tractor. Hugh Davidson had a steam engine to drive his mill at Mains of Dunnydeer. It was portable but not self-propelling as it had to be pulled by horses or a tractor to move. The 100ft chimney used to extract the smoke and steam was knocked down after James Mackie took over the farm. North Balgaveny farm was sold by Dr George Cooper around 1940. Dr George Cooper built a huge cattle court at the Mill of Dunnydeer on the site where there used to be a house and beside the railway line a small mill. The house must have been demolished in the early part of the century but the meal mill survived as a building where the farm bulls were kept. Machinery was removed from the mill for scrap in 1942 and £25?p.a. was paid to Dr George Cooper for maintaining the mill by Wardhouse until the mid 1970's when it was demolished. A man from Duncanstone committed suicide by hanging himself from one of the roof beams in the late 1950's. His body was not discovered for 2 weeks as the bulls were out in a field at the time. It must have been about autumn 1959 as Bob Pirie was cattleman at the time and also my sister Aileen McConnachie was an auxiliary nurse at Insch hospital. She was there from about 1957 to 1959 or 1960 before she started training as a nurse in Aberdeen. The beams were then cut down. Part of the Shevock was diverted here to provide a head of water to supply the Mill and then the water tower at Insch railway station to fuel the steam engines. Douglas Roger Cooper was at one time in the airforce and he also trained as an engineer with Camel Laird at Barrow-in- Furness (I don't know what came first). His father rented a croft for him called Scotston at Laurencekirk. There was a golf course in the He was then sent to farm at North steep field, with the round clump Balgaveny. After that he lived at Dunnydeer House, helping occassionally on of trees, above the drive to the farm and looking after the garden. He became president of the golf club and played in the badminton club and bridge Dunnydeer House according to George club. After his parents died and his brother Dr George Cooper bought the farms he continued to live there with a Watson Cooper who was told by Alan housekeeper provided by Dr Cooper. George W. remembers that his uncle George was most annoyed when he found out that McRobbie. Mrs Cooper opened a golf Douglas had a retirement pension from the age of 65 while he had provided for him for a large part of his life. He never course in 1906 according to a let on about his pension and it only came to light when he went to hospital just before he died. There are several silver plate which was recovered amusing stories concerning Douglas but possibly one of the best concerned his car. He ran a 1939 Vauxhall 10 for many from an umberella and is now held years. One day when he gave Dr Cooper a lift to the village a mouse ran out of the car as Dr George Cooper got out at by George Watson Cooper - could it the Post Office. Later, they discovered a nest of mice in the back seat. Betty Cosgrove remembers that he also mistook be the same golf course?. roadworks in the middle of the road at night for a parked car and said that was a stupid place to park a car. The house and steading at Whitebrow fell into disrepair after the last occupier left in the 1950's. Last year (1989) saw the completion of a bungalow on the site, occupied, I believe by 2 families from the South. Cottages were built about 1950 at the entrance to Dunnydeer House Farm drive. George W. and Betty Cooper lived there (the one nearer Insch) until 1977 with the housekeeper in the other one. These were both sold in the early 1980's. Arthur Cooper left the farm and was called up to fight in Burma during the war whilst George W. and his other brother were classified as essential farm workers and so stayed at Overhall. An old Ordanance Survey map shows the site of St John's Chapel in the top right corner of the field lying beyond Dunnydeer House. About the 1960-1970s a grave was ploughed up below the chapel. It was covered by a large flat stone 6ft by 2ft by 4 inches thick. At both ends were stones about 18ins by 9ins by 6ins thick. In the cavity there was only some black powder. Further round the hill at Milltown of Dunnydeer is St John's well. Picardy field, situated 2 fields behind Dunnydeer House, is divided by the railway and access to the far side is via a railway bridge underpass which also also spans the Shevock burn. What does "Picardy" mean. Dunnydeer House was taken over (from David Duncan) by the Craigmyle Community Trust in 1989. A house husband and his wife care for mildly handicapped people. The land and the steading are now separate properties - owners unknown. Mill of Dunnydeer is now used by a firm called Ardvack. Milltown of Dunnydeer is now known as Shevock Farm (renamed in 1984) - owner unknown. 18-02-1992 Original steading at Dunnydeer House in final stage of demolition. 28-03-1992 Walls of new house on site. German prisoners of war were billeted in nissan huts at Insch. They were sent out to work on farms in the area when requested by farmers and were found, on the whole, to be good workers and most got on very well with local people. They were good at craft work and made quite useful articles out of waste materials eg a cigarette case from an old aluminium hot water bottle, slippers from binder twine and cigarette lighters from bullet cases. They were often employed at Overhall and Dunnydeer House farms and a payment was made to the government agricultural board. A few stayed after the war and married local girls. Some of the very trusted ones lived in bothies on the farms and did not have to return to camp every night. In fact most of them were trusted because they could wander about the village as they liked. There was also an Italian prisoner of war camp at Monymusk but they, on the whole, seemed to be less popular. At one time they were employed at Overhall to pull flax which was needed to produce army equipment (flax is not usually grown in this area of the country but was requested by the government). They were never so highly regarded as workers but there must have been exceptions. Somewhere in the area there must have been a camp for "displaced persons". Two Ukranians and two Poles were once sent to help at a threshing mill at Dunnydeer. They were also regarded as good workers. There were of course some difficulties eg at a neighbouring farm where a German prisoner was allowed to live on the farm, the housekeeper resented him very much because her husband had been killed by a German bomb in Aberdeen. George Dempster Cooper was called up to the Royal Army Service Corps on the 1st December 1939 and served with the British Expeditionary Force in France from the 28th February 1940 and was evacuated from Cherbourg on the 17th June 1940. Thereafter home service until he was demobbed in March 1946 after attaining the rank of w/s? Corporal. Tyries of Dunnydeer and America (No relation to the Coopers) It is not known exactly where on Dunnydeer the Tyries lived. They dated back to 1568. In February 1746 Roger of Myreton (from whom Elizabeth Roger was descended) disarmed Tyrie of Dunnydeer in old Insch church when he attacked the minister, Mr Mearns, who denounced Tyrie as a Jacobite. In 1968 some of the descendants of Tyrie were invited to a ceremony to name Tyrie Gardens, Insch and 5 of them came across from America. A Red Hawthorn tree was planted by Sheppard Young Tyrie and I have a programme of that day signed by all of them. Next day George W. took them all to the castle at Dunnydeer with a tractor and cart. There were about 4 women and 5 men and coming down the women stayed in the cart but the men were too scared so decided to walk down the steep part. Special Occasion Bonfires a. Coronation of King George VI (193?) George W., then a teenager remembers this one quite well. There was a large fire on Dunnydeer hill and several others on the surrounding hills, including the Overhall hill. Of course it was an excuse for a great celebration so the whisky was flowing. One man rolled down the hill, stuck in whins at the fence and spent the night there. b. Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (1953) About a week before the coronation George W. and Adam Johnstone the blacksmith climbed to the top of the ruined castle on Dunnydeer and put up a Union Jack flag. That part of the ruins is about 36 feet high so it was quite an achievement. Many people collected fuel and George W. took it to the top by Caterpillar tractor (a D2). Quite a number of people helped with the building of the fire on the day before the coronation. Although the flag was of very strong material (gifted by Peter Russell) it was torn by strong winds on the day of the coronation and on the following morning only the flag pole remained. The night of the bonfire was very successful despite the gales and rain. Many people climbed the hill and again there was plenty of whisky to keep out the cold. It was one of the biggest bonfires there had ever been on Dunnydeer. c. Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee (1978) George W. insisted again on putting up a flag. This time it was with Adam Johnstone the blacksmith (son of the Adam Johnstone who with George W. put up the flag in 1953 and who had been killed in a car accident) and they put up a flagpole and a huge flag, loaned by Mrs Anderson, Edderlick. This time the flag survived with little damage. There was a huge bonfire - one of many on the hills around Insch and everyone had a great time. It was lit by Dr George Cooper (aged about 95 years). Jack Cooper b17-11-1886 - by Elizabeth Cooper -Did 2 years of medical degree in Aberdeen when he left school (I think Robert Gordons College but I'm not sure). He became very ill with T.B. as a young man and was given only 6 months to live. The family blamed the illness on the fact he had shared lodgings with another man who had the disease. However, he and his brother George (Dr) who had also contracted the disease both recovered. Jack was advised to get work out of doors so became the tenant of Broomend (This must have been during or even before the 1914-18 war because George W. said he was at Broomend for some time before he married in 1918. The Photograph Album bought by Mrs Clemo at an antique stall at Dyce and having "Jack Cooper Dunnydeer" written inside the cover was probably compiled by Mrs Panton of Pyke (Isabella Cooper b12-08-1814). Having identified some of the people in the photographs Mrs Betty Cosgrove, her husband Travers, Allan and myself discussed the album and came to the conclusion that it was probably compiled by Mrs Panton of Pyke, who, we think, had no family of her own. When she and her husband died their personal belongings would probably have gone to her nephew John A. Cooper of Mains of Dunnydeer. Since Jack was interested in photography the album was probably given to him. Betty Cosgrove remembers that her father and the rest of the family spoke fondly of "Auntie Panton" who of course would also have been a near neighbour. How the album came to be for sale on a stall at Dyce remains a mystery as George W. had never seen it before so it was probably never taken to Overhall. 28.
