John Innes

Son of James and Margaret Innes, of 1, Ardmore Cottage, Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire.

James Innes d 23/4/1942 age 82, Margaret McWilliam d 3/12/1928 age 65
Interred Kennethmont CY(Old), headstone states John KIA on the Somme, age 28

His father was Maltman at Ardmore and was known at "Matty" (Malt) Innes. He retired with his daughter Nettie to Beechwood, Kirkhill. She later married Willie Horn, a tailor.

2 GH War Diary entry.
In early July 1916 2GH were on the Somme battlefields at Bazentin and Mametz Wood.
20/7/1916, at 3.45am 2GH begin the attack on the heavily defended High Wood.
Casualties 14-21 July- killed 29, wounded 183, missing 50.

20th Brigade, 7th Division. Attacking a feature known as the Black Road near High Wood. After a barrage 8th Devons and 2nd Gordons started crawling towards their objective at 20 minutes before zero hour at 3.25am. When the barrage lifted they captured the objective. They then attacked the second objective, Wood Lane. The Germans had many machine guns and after an hour the survivors of the attack fell back to Black Road.

1/10/1914 To Lyndehurst, New Forest and in 20th Brigade, 7th Division.
7/10/1914 landed at Zeebrugge. In France and Belgium until November 1917, went to Italy.
4/11/1918 ended War at Tagliamento near Bonzieco, Italy.
